10 DAYS AWAY – MAP18 Reflections

I’ve been up since 3AM reading words that chronicle the last few months of Martin Luther King’s Jr. life —

Before he was assassinated, he started to campaign about people in this country that were experiencing extreme poverty.

His agenda was to ensure that those on the margins of society were not forgotten.

King believed poverty was a Civil Rights issue, and so do I.

Every single day, I feel that same burning passion to ensure that this nation remembers the voiceless and invisible of our society.

In 10 Days, I’ll set out on another journey.
I’m literally walking from The Center For Civil & Human Rights to the Lorraine Motel (386 miles) to honor the 50th year of King’s passing, and to bring attention to an issue that he stood against—poverty.

I’m grateful for the historical partners we’ve had to endorse the #MAP18 campaign!

In the words of King,

“If you want to be important—wonderful. If you want to be recognized—wonderful. If you want to be great—wonderful. But recognize that he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. That’s a new definition of greatness.”

Atlanta’s First Mobile Shelter – Mobile Stay

Earlier this year, we started using creative housing to get people experiencing homelessness off the streets.

We’ve learned a lot about how hard it is to find a place to stay if you miss the cut-off time for a shelter. Therefore, we started telling this story about excess. In this country, we have so much excess, but we have yet to tap into this excess to solve “real time” problems.

A few months back, a generous family reached out to us and donated this brand new RV (equipped with a shower, a restroom, and living space).

They took their excess and said, “We want to see it help people…”

Therefore, we’ve decided to launch Atlanta’s first Mobile Shelter. It’s called Mobile Stay, and we are less than a month away from giving stays to those who have no safety net.

You will not believe this!

Over the last couple of months, our organization has been intentional about giving people experiencing homelessness untraditional housing to get them off of the streets, and provide a place to stay that’s safe.

If we can be honest, it’s been messy, hard, confusing, and fun all at the same time. We’ve laughed with them, have had the privilege of celebrating successes, and have talked through struggles.

Long story short, we’ve just taken what’s in front of us and have used it to serve those who are forgotten.

Little did we know that a family was watching our work with using trailers to provide housing.  Well, this same family reached out and donated our organization this RV trailer! Wow is all we can say!

We can’t wait to reveal what this will become for our next campaign.

Atlanta Hawks Come To Love Beyond Walls

This past Friday, we got a chance to partner with Woodward Academy to serve hundreds of people for #FeedTheNeed.

Not only did we hang out with families to give them hope for the Holiday, but we had a wonderful surprise to take place.

The Atlanta Hawks came to our headquarters with “Harry the Hawk,” several representatives from the Hawks organization, and Kaiser to present our Executive Director [Terence] with an award [#TrueToAtlantaAward] for the #MAP16 journey.

Additionally, the Hawks got a chance to hang out with the community and encourage them along with us.

Official MAP16 Documentary Trailer & Poverty Panel

Yesterday, Johnny Taylor and I (Terence) got a chance to share a small piece of the #MAP16 journey with the public for the first time since we’ve been back from Washington, DC.

Additionally, we got a chance to share our “official” documentary trailer. Would you like to see it? Most of it was shot during the walk!

Hold on to your seats… It’s powerful.
